This double LP released in 1980 contains all ten of Pharoah Sanders’ performances from the Journey to One sessions. The Quintet seamlessly shifts between spiritual peace and violent outbursts in Sanders’ tenor solos, most notably seen in our favourite song and high point of the album ‘you’ve gotta have freedom’ (which has the legendary Bobby McFerrin as one of the background singers).
The backup group changes from track to track but often includes bassist Ray Drummond, pianist John Hicks, and drummer Idris Muhammad.
Sanders really pays ode to his former mentor John Coltrane on “After the Rain”and a romantic “Easy to Remember.” Other highlights are the exotic “Kazuko,” on which Sanders is accompanied by kato, harmonium, and wind chimes.
