Sumochief are a London based group consisting of Oscar Laurence (Guitar), Joe Armon- Jones (Keys), Jack Polley (bass) and Olly Sarkar (drums). Their music is heavily influenced by the likes of J Dilla, D’Angelo, The Roots, The Robert Glasper experiment and many more.
Mostly written and performed live, their music reflects both their classical jazz training. as well as their many hip-hop influences. Having released their debut E.P ‘Sumobeats’ on Lunatick Records in 2014 along with a remix series they have since filmed a successful string of ‘SumoSessions’ with the likes of UK rappers Delta Lima, James Messiah and Coops. Their second E.P ‘SumoTreats’ features a number of brilliant collaborations with some of London’s finest creative minds. Aptly named the release seamlessly flows between Jazz, UK Hip-hop and straight Rhythm & Blues.
‘ChilliFlake Honeysap’ sees the collective team up with rising North London Hip-hop outfit OthaSoul who spray that Pharcyde-esque flow in a poetic reflection of growing up in the City.
Dj Jazz T scratches over ‘Sumo Shakout’ skillfully intertwining some classic Grandmaster flash over the top of a tickling Rhodes line. The Jazz-like structure of ‘Epidemic’ lets the masterful groups playing breathe for a few minutes before bringing in vocal contributions from previous collaborator Cecil B Demented along with Rago Foot & Maxwell Owin. This whole E.P encapsulates the ‘in the moment’ feeling of a good live performance, peppered with conscious rhyme and Soul, there’s nothing not to like.
