Alfa Mist joins a certain clique in London that are fuelling an irrepressible movement in alternative modern jazz that takes on a different form depending on the artist, erring on the side of anything fom Latin to Afrobeats to, as is the case here and with many of the artists Alfa Mist works with, soulful Hip-hop.
Welcome to ‘Aniphon’, a timeless compilation of intricate melodies and socio-political narration and raps.
The music is beautiful, mellow and melancholy. The kind of blend of jazz harmony with alternative Hip-hop/soul that makes you want to melt into the sofa and zone out for hours. As he says himself in his EP video (below), Alfa Mist is a sit-back-and-reflect kind of person and this new EP manifests itself as an unapologetic expression of some of the things going on around him, a cathartic remedy to mental health and relationship issues.
It is the 2nd EP after the UK producer’s debut ‘Nocturne’ EP 2 years ago. Besides singer and bass player Kaya Thomas-Dyke, who also made the beautiful artwork, other musicians working on the EP include Jordan Rakei, Rudi Creswick, Jamie Houghton and Johnny Woodham.
