Daniel Casimir – Really For Always

‘Gifted UK bass player Daniel Casimir enlists the help of the cream of young UK jazz talent to bring us a sublime offering of soul tinged jazz. With Shirley Tetteh on guitar, Joe Armon-Jones on keys, Moses Boyd on drums, and co-writer Tess Hirst on vocals this is a winner from any angle and I for one cannot wait for the full EP to drop courtesy of the ever hardworking crew at Jazz Re:freshed records.’

Jonah Levine Collective – Attention Deficit

‘Flipping between the contemporary and the futuristic this tidy little collection from West Coast based Jonah Levine Collective has me properly lit. A jaw dropping first listen led me to investigate more about this group of musicians led by piano and trombone skilled Jonah Levine. He has worked with artists such as Leonard Cohen, The Game, Ed Sheeran, Anderson .Paak, Josef Leimberg, Nx Worries, MNDSGN, Iman Omari, Ryan Leslie, Jeff Parker, Bennie Maupin, Chris “Daddy” Dave, George Watsky and Shafiq Husayn and the LP feats collabs with acclaimed hip-hop producer Mndsgn and Iman Omari. Standout tune ‘Qu’est-Ce que c’est (The French Song)’. This really is an amazing piece of work from a band with label mates such as Miles Mosley and Ronald Bruner Jr.’

Cameron Graves – Planetary Prince

‘An uncompromising and life affirming assortment of tunes from pianist, and one of the founder members of the ‘West Coast Get Down’ (along with Kamasi and Miles M) Cameron Graves. Veering from classical to jazz with many stops in between he never fails to keep your attention. A proper rollercoaster of an lp that must figure in next year’s Grammy nominations if there is any justice in this world.’

Philippe Baden Powell – Notes Over Poetry

‘Acclaimed French / Brazilian pianist Philippe Baden-Powell delivers his fifth lp with little fanfare but with an assurance that you will not be disappointed with its musicality or lyricism. Son of legendary Brazilian musician Baden Powell there is no evidence of generation skipping of talent. I have seriously fallen for this lp with its lush mix of samba, jazz, grooves and bossa. And I’m pretty certain Philippe has a touch of the Jobims surrounding his vocals, which can’t be a bad thing.’

Ronald Bruner Jr – Triumph

‘With a mixture of deep fusion, soul, R&B, jazz and pop, the debut lp from Ronald Bruner Jr has lived up to my every expectation. Aided and abetted by Ronald’s brothers Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner and Jameel Bruner of The Internet it was recorded during the infamous KSL Sessions that produced Kamasi Washington’s ‘The Epic’ and Miles Mosley’s ‘Uprising’. Proper fire going on here with standouts being fusion epic ‘Open The Gate’ and the sublime ‘Doesn’t Matter’. A must have.’
