Ahead of their album launch on March 8th at Ghost Notes in Peckham, South London jazz-funk quartet The Expansions have shared this live recording of epic album track, Ivory Mountain.
Their album Murmuration lands at the end of the week featuring six tracks of Idris Muhammad, Johnny Hammond and Herbie Hancock inspired excellence. All tracks were recorded to tape as single takes in the analogue haven that is Big Noise Studios in South End, a place they’d recently spent time laying tracks for Jalapeno Records’ soul singer Gizelle Smith.
The band have also spent much of the last 4 years recording and gigging with Gilles Peterson favourite Connie Constance and in various line ups for Andrew Ashong. Both artists have definitely left an impression on the band and had some effect on the feel of their music and production since the early, self-released EP Lavender.
Ivory Mountain itself is a two-sided exploration of jazz-funk grooves, the first half taking off with a latter-day 4Hero vibe, before switching up to a disco groove that culminates in a cacophony of sound reminiscent of Johnny Hammond’s Los Conquistadores Chocolate.
As with the album, the take on this recording is a single run through and visuals are stitched together from an evening of playing and celebrating the arrival of the new vinyl.
