Having collaborated with many vital UK jazz artists such as Maisha, Theon Cross, Nubia Garcia, Cykada, Don Kipper and more, whilst making a solid name for himself on the London scene, drummer Tim Dolyle AKA Chiminyo is now set to release his debut solo record ‘I Am Chiminyo’.
‘I Am Chiminyo’ is a departure from the jazz territory and an introduction to his electronic solo project. Each track is performed on live drums, which then trigger synth sounds – no loops or backing tracks. Evocative of drum and bass legends such as LTJ Bukem and echoing the likes of Squarepusher and DJ Shadow, this is the ultimate definition of Chiminyo’s sound and style.
His new single ‘Dharma Bodies’ perfectly exemplifies his inimitable style and technique with stunningly intricate yet raw rhythms that supply an arresting groove alongside an almost surprisingly mellifluous trip-hop influenced sequence of samples. It’s a seriously impressive outing, not only because of Chiminyo’s extreme dynamics and dexterity but also because of the process involved. Live drums and electronics are nothing new but Chiminyo’s self-designed, self-coded software allows him to trigger samples and manipulate the electronics as he plays.
