Faizal Mostrixx hails from the cultural melting pot that is Kampala’s burgeoning music scene. His new EP ‘Ghosts’ sees him melding samples from the continent and beyond with a whirlwind of beats and synths. ‘Flute Cry’, coming in at track 2, is a sample of the producer’s forward-thinking sound as he lays down a range of contemplative, abstract electronics.
Faizal played at the infamous Nyege Nyege festival, mesmerising audiences with organic rhythms and poetic electronic instrumentalism. As Africa Nouveau Festival puts it, he is “an agent of ascension through the elevation of culture in Uganda and beyond”.
And he’s generating attention far beyond the Ugandan capital. The Quietus have singled him out for praise – “his electronic production focuses on traditional African instruments, with the intent of preserving and developing his cultural heritage” – and he has recently been picked up to provide the music to the ‘Freedom’ advert for Olivia Oblanc’s Adidas Originals Collection, as well as receiving radio play on NTS, Netil and more.
