Seasoned trailblazers Da Lata bless us with the title track of their much-anticipated forthcoming album. Written by Chris Franck and Davide Giovaninni, Oba Lata draws on traditional Yoruban chant blended with a live afro-beat groove.
Edgy, rhythmical analogue synths, vocals, guitars and percussion tied together by the clave and driving afro-bassline make this a lively addition to the summer playlist. The vocals honour ‘Obatala’, one of the main Orishas in Yoruban culture. He is seen as the creator of earth and lover of peace and harmony.
Da Lata, the brainchild of Chris Franck and Patrick Forge, maintain their distinct dance floor sensibility with their latest album produced by Franck and recorded at Ernie McKone’s Boogie Back Studios. It sees its first single release with this title track forming the basis of a 3-track EP that pays homage to the West African cultures that have heavily influenced the band’s 25-year history and featuring a remix by broken beat pioneers NameBrandSound (IG Culture and Alex Phountzi).
Oba Lata EP is available here on 12″ and digital.
