Chris Menist, a.k.a Awkward Corners is an incredible musician and selector, specialising in corners of the globe where it’s hardest to find records. Alongside DJ Maft Sai, Chris hosted the ‘Paradise Bangkok’ nights in Thailand which soon developed into it’s own label, releasing hidden gems from across Asia and music from their own band ‘The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band’, who’s debut ‘21st Century Molam’ in 2014 was named Gilles Peterson’s Album of the Week on his BBC 6Music show.
Since then, Chris has worked on his own project ‘Awkward Corners’ under which name he has had various releases and two beautifully deep full length LP’s, featuring the likes of Sarathy Korwar, Tamar Osborn (Collocutor) and Kitty Whitelaw. Somehow amongst all this, Chris has also managed to hold down a monthly show on NTS Radio ’Paradise Bangkok’, and also curate various compilations unearthing secret treasures from around the world, most notably ‘Sound of Siam’ 1 & 2 on Soundway Records, and the ‘Disco Dildar’ and ‘Thai? Dai!’ Compilations on Finders Keepers Records.
Chris’ most recent venture is releasing the first compilation of the legendary Afghan Ghazal singer Dr. Mohammad Sadiq Fitrat a.k.a. Nashenas on Strut Records, dedicated to the memory of the late, great Mads Jensen who co-compiled the release. The compilation will be coming out this year on the 24th February. For this weeks mix, Chris has got his fingers dusty and dug deep into his Thai vinyl crates for a deep mix of South-East Asian sounds. No tracklist for this one I’m afraid!
